Cat6 vs Cat6A: Choosing Cabling for Your Property

Cat6 or Cat6A for your property? Compare cable routes, equipment needs, installation space and testing before choosing a structured cabling scope.

Home › Cabling choices

Cat6 and Cat6A are categories of twisted-pair network cabling. Choose between them by the performance you need across the installed route, the equipment at each end and the space available for installation.

Start with the network task

A typical household streaming video and making calls has different needs from a workspace moving large files between local devices. Record the required links, their approximate lengths and any planned higher-speed equipment. An internet plan alone does not define every local-network requirement.

Our data and communications team can scope the outlets and equipment locations before you select the cable category.

Compare the complete installed link

FactorDecision to make
Performance targetState the network speed and route length you need supported.
Installation spaceAllow for cable diameter, bend radius, pathways and termination space.
Connected equipmentCheck switch ports, network adapters and patch leads.
EnvironmentDiscuss interference, separation and the cable construction suited to the site.
VerificationSpecify labelling and test results for the installed cabling.

Cat6 is a common choice for gigabit connections up to a 100 m channel. Cat6A supports 10-gigabit Ethernet over a 100 m channel when the complete installed system and equipment meet that specification. Cat6A is designed for higher-frequency performance than Cat6. That can matter for higher-speed links, but a category label on the cable does not guarantee the performance of an entire installation.

Account for space and access

Cat6A options can be larger or less flexible than some Cat6 products. Compare the actual cable specification and the route, especially through existing walls, crowded pathways or a compact cabinet. The installer needs room to maintain the correct bend radius and terminate the cable properly.

During a renovation, agree outlet positions before walls are closed. At an existing property, access and making good may influence the project as much as the cable price itself.

Shielding is a separate specification

Check the cable specification to confirm whether it is shielded. Shielded and unshielded constructions have different installation requirements. Ask the installer to select a complete system suited to the environment, including connectors and any bonding requirements.

Keep the quote focused on the performance and installation outcome. A suitable, correctly installed and tested system is more useful than an isolated component upgrade.

Set out the quote and handover

  • Number and location of outlets, including access points and fixed devices.
  • Required performance and any longer routes.
  • Cable, outlet and patch-panel specification.
  • Labels that match a simple room or port schedule.
  • Test method, results and responsibility for patch leads.

Our Ethernet and Wi-Fi guide helps decide which rooms need wired outlets. If cameras are part of the project, include their power and network requirements in the same brief.

Questions about Cabling choices

Will Cat6A improve every device automatically?

No. The device, ports, switch, patch leads and installed link all affect performance. Choose the cabling around a defined network requirement.

Should I choose cabling before choosing outlet locations?

Plan the locations and routes first. Those details help the installer recommend a cable system and explain the installation scope.

Send us a floor plan and the devices you want connected. We can help specify cable routes, outlets and testing for a network that fits the property.
