LED Lights Flickering: Patterns to Tell Your Electrician

LED lights flickering? Record when it happens, which fittings are affected and any warning signs, so our electricians can investigate the right fault.

Home › Flickering LEDs

Flickering LEDs can come from a lamp, driver or dimmer mismatch, a faulty fitting, or an electrical supply problem. The pattern helps us decide what to check, but it does not identify the cause on its own.

Start with the pattern

Notice whether one light flickers, a group on one switch flickers, or lights in several rooms change together. Write down when it started and whether the lights pulse, flash briefly, go out or change brightness. If the symptom is intermittent, a short video taken from a safe position can help us see it.

Tell us whether the problem began after a lamp replacement, a new dimmer, building work or an appliance change. Keep the packaging or model details for recently fitted lamps. Our lighting installation team can check the fitting and control combination.

When to stop using the light

Stop using affected equipment if you notice a burning smell, unusual heat, sparks, damage or an electric shock. Keep people away and seek urgent electrical help. If there is smoke or fire, move to safety and call 111. Do not remove covers, touch wiring or investigate inside a switchboard.

Flickering across several rooms, particularly with unusually bright or dim lights, needs prompt professional attention. Report the wider pattern rather than assuming every bulb needs replacement.

Dimmer and lamp compatibility

A dimmable LED still needs a compatible dimmer. Some combinations flicker at the bottom of the dimming range; a driver or the number of lamps on the circuit can also affect operation. Tell us which ordinary control settings were in use when the flicker occurred, without repeatedly operating a light that appears faulty.

We can assess the lamp, driver and control together. If you are planning different controls, our smart switch and smart bulb comparison explains the choices to discuss before buying.

Prepare a useful fault report

  • Room, switch and number of affected fittings.
  • Whether other rooms or appliances are affected at the same time.
  • Lamp and dimmer model details already available to you.
  • Time, frequency and duration of the flicker.
  • Recent work or replacement lamps, plus any smell, noise or heat.

If a protective device is also operating, include that in your report and read our RCD tripping checklist. Do not bypass protection or keep resetting it to restore the lights.

Repair first, then choose your replacement

Once the cause is established, we can discuss whether the fitting, lamp, driver or control needs attention. If an upgrade is appropriate, compare light output, colour and controls as well as wattage. Our LED energy comparison helps you evaluate replacement options using your own hours of use.

Questions about Flickering LEDs

Can a new LED flicker even if it works in another fitting?

Yes. The lamp may interact differently with a dimmer or driver in another fitting. Give us the model details so we can check the combination.

Should I replace every light if several rooms flicker?

Have the wider electrical problem investigated first. Replacing lamps may not address a fault affecting several rooms.

Send us the room details and flicker pattern. We can arrange an assessment and discuss the repair or lighting upgrade that suits the cause.
