EV charger load balancing adjusts charging demand to work within a configured electrical limit. A compatible system can reduce or pause charging as other loads change, then increase it when capacity is available.

What load balancing manages
Cooking, water heating and other equipment can operate while the car is plugged in. A load-management system can monitor demand and adjust the charger, depending on its design. It manages the use of available capacity; it does not increase the size of the incoming supply.
Our EV charger installation team assesses the supply, charger and other loads together. The system settings must be chosen for the installation.
Fixed limits and dynamic control
A fixed charging limit caps the charger’s demand at a chosen setting. Dynamic control responds to measured demand, while some systems can also share an allocation between chargers. The available features depend on the equipment and how it is configured.
A timer is different: it schedules when charging is allowed. Scheduling can be useful, but on its own it does not monitor every other load in the home.
Check the whole system
- Compatibility between the charger and load-monitoring equipment.
- Where demand is measured and which loads are included.
- Communication between the monitor and charger.
- Behaviour if the measurement or communication is unavailable.
- How the system is commissioned and explained at handover.
These are design questions for the installer. Do not change installer settings or current limits yourself to overcome slow charging.
Plan around the time you have
If charging demand is reduced while the home is busy, the car may need a longer charging window. Tell us the usual arrival and departure times, distance driven and whether a second EV is planned. Compare the required energy with the realistic time available.
Our EV installation quote guide helps you identify monitoring hardware and setup as separate quote items. Load balancing does not automatically remove the need for any board or supply work.
Recognise normal control and a fault
A charger reducing output may be following its configured load-management settings. Record the displayed status, time and other equipment in use so the installer can interpret it. An unexplained fault message, damage, overheating or repeated loss of charging needs separate attention.
Use our EV charger support checklist to collect safe observations if charging has stopped. Keep manufacturer instructions and commissioning information with the charger records.
Questions about Charger load balancing
Does load balancing charge my car faster?
Its purpose is to manage charging within the configured capacity. It may reduce charging at busy times and allow more when other demand falls.
Can a timer replace dynamic load balancing?
A timer controls the charging schedule. Dynamic load balancing responds to measured demand, so they perform different jobs.
